Kenya's Beatrice Chebet Breaks Women's 5000m World Record Under 14 Minutes
Kenya's Beatrice Chebet made history by becoming the first woman to run the 5,000 meters in under 14 minutes, setting a new world record of 13:58.06 at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon. She broke the previous record of 14:00.21, held by Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay, by more than two seconds during a race paced for world record attempts. Chebet, a double Olympic champion in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters, led the race after the pacers dropped out and delivered a powerful kick in the final 200 meters to secure her victory. Agnes Jebet Ngetich finished second with the third-fastest time ever at 14:01.29, while Tsegay, the previous record-holder, came third. Chebet also holds the world record in the 10,000 meters, which she set at the same venue last year, underscoring her dominance in long-distance track events. This performance adds to her impressive resume, including gold medals at the Paris Olympics and a sub-14-minute road 5K run earlier in 2024.
