Massachusetts Assisted Living Fire Leaves 9 Dead
A devastating fire broke out at the Gabriel House assisted living facility in Fall River, Massachusetts, on Sunday night, resulting in at least nine deaths and injuring more than 30 residents. The blaze began around 9:50 PM, trapping elderly residents, with some seen hanging out of windows and screaming for help as flames spread through the building. About 70 people were in the facility at the time, and nearly 50 firefighters—including off-duty personnel—responded, rescuing many and carrying out non-ambulatory residents. Five firefighters were injured but are expected to recover. The city has established a temporary shelter for survivors while authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire. Local leaders have described the incident as an unfathomable tragedy for the community.
