A recent study led by King's College London suggests that a headset delivering transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) could significantly enhance depression treatment when used at home. The Flow FL-100 headset, which applies a weak electrical current to the brain, showed promising results with 57.5% of patients experiencing full remission of symptoms after a 10-week course. Patients who used the device saw up to threefold improvement in achieving remission compared to a control group, and when combined with antidepressants, remission rates increased to 67.1%. The treatment, involving sessions monitored via video link, is seen as a potential first-line option for those not fully benefiting from traditional therapies. The study underscores the potential of brain stimulation as a non-invasive, effective, and well-tolerated treatment for major depressive disorder. These findings are considered groundbreaking for future depression treatment strategies.
