San Mateo County's Board of Supervisors has unanimously approved a $14 million loan for the Midway Village redevelopment project, which aims to construct 555 affordable housing units, marking it as the largest project of its kind in the county's history. The project, located near the Cow Palace in Daly City, will replace the outdated 150-unit housing complex originally built in the 1970s, significantly increasing the number of affordable homes available. Phase 1 of the project has already completed 147 units, while the upcoming Phase 2 will add 111 more units, including accommodations for low-income families and a childcare center. This initiative is part of a broader state mandate for San Mateo County to construct over 47,000 homes by 2031, addressing the area’s critical housing needs. Local officials emphasized the transformative impact of the project, which will also include support services for vulnerable populations, such as former foster youth and individuals experiencing homelessness. The redevelopment is being led by the nonprofit MidPen Housing, which aims to create a sustainable and inclusive community.
