Interpol has successfully executed Operation Jackal III, resulting in the arrest of over 300 individuals linked to the notorious Black Axe criminal network across 21 countries from April to July 2024. The operation was hailed as a significant setback for the Nigerian crime syndicate, which is involved in cyber-enabled financial fraud, trafficking, and other serious crimes, and has been described as highly organized and technologically advanced. Approximately $3 million in illegal assets were seized, and more than 700 bank accounts were frozen, highlighting the group's extensive reach and sophisticated methods of operation. Tomonobu Kaya, a senior Interpol official, emphasized that Black Axe exploits advancements in financial technology and cryptocurrency to facilitate multi-million dollar scams. Despite these efforts, experts warn that the group's international influence and corruption within local authorities continue to pose a significant challenge in combating their activities. Previous 'Jackal' operations have laid the groundwork for a comprehensive intelligence network among Interpol's 196 member countries, yet further measures are needed to address the root causes of such criminal syndicates.
