Jumping balloon accident
Catherine Egam Mcewan, a 43-year-old mother of two from the Philippines, tragically died following a freak accident during a 'jumping balloon' activity at a resort in Olango Island on July 11. While participating in the inflatable attraction with her husband and children, she was accidentally launched into the air and landed head-first on the inflatable surface, resulting in a severe spinal injury. Lifeguards attempted to rescue her after she failed to resurface, but she remained unresponsive and was later pronounced dead on July 19 after being in a coma. In response to the incident, Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard Chan issued a cease-and-desist order on the resort, Pinky's Floating Cottage, pending an investigation into safety practices. The resort management stated that they provide safety instructions to all visitors and have pledged to cover Mcewan's medical and burial expenses. The incident has raised concerns over water sports safety regulations in the region.
