Tata Steel appoints McAlpine for £1.25bn Port Talbot steelworks

Tata Steel has appointed Sir Robert McAlpine as the main contractor for a £1.25 billion project to construct a new electric arc furnace-based steel production facility at Port Talbot, aimed at producing three million tonnes of low-CO2 steel annually. The project marks a significant step in Tata's strategy to decarbonize its operations and secure a sustainable future for steelmaking in the UK. Enabling works are set to begin in the first quarter of 2025, with main construction scheduled for the third quarter of 2025, pending planning approval, and the entire project is expected to take three years to complete. McAlpine, which has been collaborating with Tata Steel since September 2022, will manage the civil, structural, and building works involved in the project. The initiative not only focuses on advanced steelmaking technology but also includes investments in workforce training to enhance skills in electric arc furnace technology. This ambitious effort aims to transform Port Talbot into a leading hub for sustainable steel production in the UK.
