In a historic milestone, electric vehicles (EVs) now outnumber petrol cars in Norway, with 754,303 electric cars compared to 753,905 petrol cars out of the 2.8 million private cars registered. Diesel cars still remain the most numerous at just under 1 million but are rapidly declining in sales. Norway, a major oil and gas producer, aims to sell only zero-emission vehicles by 2025, significantly ahead of the EU's 2035 goal. Generous tax rebates and incentives, such as free parking and city toll exemptions, have fueled the rise of EVs, which accounted for 94.3% of new car registrations in August 2024. This rapid adoption contrasts sharply with struggles seen elsewhere in Europe, where EV sales are declining. Norway's transition is part of a broader effort to meet its climate commitments, facilitated by its substantial sovereign wealth fund from oil revenues.
