E3 Begins Snapback Countdown to Reimpose UN Sanctions on Iran
On August 28, 2025, the European countries France, Germany, and the United Kingdom (the E3) activated the snapback mechanism under the 2015 Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA), initiating a 30-day countdown to reimpose UN sanctions on Iran due to its significant noncompliance, including uranium enrichment beyond civilian needs and restricting IAEA access. The E3 emphasized that their decision aimed to preserve the ability to restore sanctions before the JCPOA's expiration in October, while also expressing willingness to extend the snapback period if Iran addresses immediate concerns and resumes fair negotiations. Iran condemned the move as illegal and a product of US influence, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warning it would undermine diplomacy and compel an appropriate response, though Tehran has yet to retaliate practically. The situation follows recent Israeli and US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites that reportedly set back Iran’s nuclear program by about two years. While Iran has expressed readiness for renewed talks if the West shows goodwill, skepticism remains as Tehran continues to suspend cooperation with the IAEA and resists full compliance. The ongoing diplomatic standoff illustrates deep divisions over Iran's nuclear ambitions and the enforcement of international agreements amid increasing geopolitical tensions.
