As a straight actor, he felt a significant responsibility to authentically represent the gay character amid societal pressures, stating, 'I was not going to make my living playing a gay man, but then say, 'Oh, I would never be associated with that.' He faced pushback from executives who suggested he clarify his heterosexuality, which he resisted, believing it would undermine the importance of his role. Furthermore, Savant avoided discussing his sexuality during press tours, citing a lack of understanding from publicists about the gravity of representation. Despite the character's groundbreaking nature, Savant noted that Matt Fielding was never given a love scene, highlighting the limitations placed on LGBTQ+ portrayals in media at the time.
