Child Dies After Chemical Incident in East London Flat, 12 Evacuated

A child has died following a hazardous materials incident at a flat on Barking Road in Upton Park, Newham, after two adults and two children went to hospital complaining of a smell of chemicals. London Fire Brigade said specially trained crews carried out a systematic sweep of the property, ventilated the scene and evacuated about 12 neighbouring residents as a precaution. The first call was made around 13:18–13:20 and crews stood the incident down roughly between 16:20 and 16:23. The Metropolitan Police, supported by the fire brigade, is investigating the source of the incident; no further details about the cause or the child’s identity have been released so far.
