Australia funds $8 million for Queensland aviation fuel projects
The Australian government has announced an A$8 million investment to support the development of a biorefinery at the Isis Central Sugar Mill in Queensland, aiming to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from sugar mill waste. This initiative, led by Australian technology firm Licella, is expected to create approximately 300 construction jobs and 100 ongoing operational roles if proven viable. Additionally, Viva Energy will receive A$2.4 million to facilitate the storage and use of SAF at Brisbane Airport, with plans to recondition a fuel tank for blended SAF supply. Officials emphasize that this local SAF production could reduce domestic aviation emissions by up to 80% compared to fossil fuels, contributing to Australia's net zero goals. The initiative aligns with the government's broader strategy to utilize natural resources for industry growth while addressing environmental concerns. Industry leaders highlight the potential for the sugarcane sector to diversify revenue streams and enhance sustainability.
