Russia Plans New Embassies, Economic Ties with Ethiopia

Russia is seeking to bolster its diplomatic and economic ties with African nations, particularly Ethiopia, as Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced plans to open new embassies across the continent by 2026. During a recent high-level meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopian officials underscored the potential for enhancing economic cooperation, with a focus on trade, investment, and technology sharing, particularly in sectors like energy and agriculture. Ethiopian House of Federation Speaker Agegnehu Teshager expressed gratitude for Russia's historical support and emphasized the importance of further elevating the strategic partnership. Valentina Matvienko, Speaker of the Russian Federation Council, highlighted Ethiopia's key role as a partner in Africa, celebrating 127 years of diplomatic relations. Both nations are working towards a balanced trade relationship, aiming to expand exports and investments in vital sectors. This collaboration reflects a broader Russian strategy to reclaim influence in Africa, emphasizing anti-colonial sentiments and economic partnerships.
