Romania Completes Second Renewable Auction Awarding 2.7GW, Surpassing 4.2GW Target
Romania has successfully completed its second renewable energy auction under the Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme, awarding 2,751 MW of solar and wind capacity and bringing the total CfD-backed capacity to 4.2 GW, surpassing the national target of 3.5 GW set under the Recovery and Resilience Plan. The auctions attracted bids exceeding 5,500 MW, with solar photovoltaic bids reaching competitive prices as low as €35 per megawatt-hour, highlighting Romania's growing competitiveness in renewable energy. Developed with support and technical assistance from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the CfD framework provides long-term revenue stability to developers and strengthens renewable market integration, financed by the European Union Modernisation Fund. The EBRD has been instrumental in policy design and implementation, signing a memorandum of understanding with Romania's Ministry of Energy to support continued auctions and reforms to integrate energy storage. Romania aims to have 44% of its gross final energy consumption from low-carbon sources by 2035, positioning itself as a regional leader in affordable, secure, and sustainable energy. The success of these auctions underscores Romania's commitment to accelerating its green transition and meeting its climate and energy targets under EU programmes.
