LeVar Burton to Deliver Howard University Commencement Address May 2025

LeVar Burton, the Emmy-winning actor and literacy advocate, will deliver the keynote address at Howard University’s 157th Commencement on May 10, 2025, and will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. Known for his roles in 'Roots' and 'Star Trek: The Next Generation,' as well as for hosting 'Reading Rainbow,' Burton has inspired generations to embrace reading. The ceremony will celebrate one of the largest graduating classes in Howard's history, with students from its 14 schools and colleges earning degrees across various disciplines. In addition to Burton, honorary degrees will be awarded to several notable figures, including Congresswoman Barbara Lee and Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Natasha Trethewey. The commencement events will include recognition ceremonies for individual schools leading up to the main event. Howard University, founded in 1867, continues to emphasize the importance of education and cultural pride in its ceremonies.
