Scottish Maclean Brothers Set Fastest Pacific Ocean Rowing Record
Three Scottish brothers, Jamie, Ewan, and Lachlan Maclean, set a new world record by completing the fastest unsupported row across the full Pacific Ocean, rowing over 9,000 miles nonstop from Peru to Cairns, Australia in 139 days. They are the first team to achieve this full crossing from South America to Australia, surpassing the previous solo record of 160 days set by Russian rower Fyodor Konyukhov in 2014. The brothers endured severe storms, seasickness, injuries, and even a violent storm that swept Lachlan overboard, while raising over £700,000 toward a £1 million target for clean water projects in Madagascar through their Maclean Foundation. Upon arrival, they were greeted by over 50 family members and supporters, with Ewan describing the journey as the hardest thing he has ever done, highlighting the emotional highs and lows they experienced. They rowed in two-hour shifts around the clock and expressed newfound appreciation for everyday comforts like showers and beds, with Jamie noting the experience was often surreal and exhausting. The brothers plan to continue fundraising efforts to provide clean water for 40,000 people in Madagascar and look forward to returning to Scotland and their charity work.
