Helen Williams, Advocate and Educator, Dies at 85

Helen Williams, mother of actress Vanessa Williams, passed away at the age of 85 from acute liver failure in London, shortly after attending the opening of Vanessa's musical, The Devil Wears Prada. Helen was a significant advocate for arts, education, and social justice, with a rich legacy in music education and activism. Born in Buffalo, she was among the first Black students to integrate East High School and later attended SUNY Fredonia, where she was honored with several awards, including the Fredonia Alumni Association's Outstanding Achievement Award. Her daughter Vanessa temporarily stepped back from her role in the musical due to her mother's passing and paid tribute to Helen's impactful life. The family plans to hold private memorial services, and donations are encouraged for the Helen Tinch Williams Vocal Performance Fund.
