Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, has announced a purchase of 500,000 doses of the Bavarian Nordic mpox vaccine to address outbreaks in Africa, particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where over 25,000 cases and 723 deaths have been reported this year. This acquisition is facilitated by Gavi's newly established First Response Fund, designed for rapid vaccine procurement during health emergencies. The doses are expected to be delivered by the end of 2024 and will be allocated to the hardest-hit regions based on WHO criteria. In addition to Gavi's order, the U.K. government has secured 150,000 doses for its National Health Service. The WHO recently approved the vaccine, enabling organizations like Gavi and UNICEF to procure supplies, but the demand significantly exceeds available doses in affected areas. Overall, over 4.1 million vaccine doses have been pledged for Africa's mpox response, highlighting the urgent need for increased vaccine availability.
