A lithium-ion battery fire at a San Diego Gas & Electric storage facility in Escondido ignited on September 5, prompting evacuations of around 500 businesses and the cancellation of classes at nearby schools. Fire officials determined that the best course of action was to allow the fire to burn itself out due to the complexities of battery fires, while cooling neighboring storage containers to prevent spread. The fire was confined to one of the 24 storage containers, and while there were no reported injuries, evacuation orders remained in effect as a precaution. Firefighters expect the fire could last between 12 to 48 hours until it fully extinguishes. Authorities are continuously monitoring air quality and the situation, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
