Crypto Duo Remain Jailed in SoHo Kidnapping Case

John Woeltz and William Duplessie pleaded not guilty to charges of kidnapping, assault, and coercion after allegedly torturing an Italian businessman in a SoHo townhouse to obtain his cryptocurrency passwords. Prosecutors allege the men subjected the victim to beatings, electric shocks, and being set on fire with tequila, presenting evidence such as photos of the victim with a gun to his head and a chainsaw at the scene. The prosecution also suggested the possibility of additional victims, citing discussions with other law enforcement agencies. The defense presented videos purportedly showing the victim behaving freely and engaging in consensual activities, arguing this contradicted the torture claims. Prosecutors countered that abuse victims may not always act predictably. Both defendants remain in custody pending their next court appearance and face up to life in prison if convicted.
