Suffolk Taxi Drivers Cite Cost, Range, Charging Hurdles to EV Transition
A report commissioned by Suffolk County Council has highlighted significant barriers preventing taxi drivers from transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs), including concerns over range, cost, and insufficient charging infrastructure. Currently, 81% of Suffolk's taxi fleet operates on diesel, with many drivers expressing skepticism about the practicality of EVs for longer journeys. The survey revealed that drivers are particularly worried about the limited driving range of EVs, which they feel might not meet their daily needs, and that suitable electric models are often too expensive. Councils are planning to launch an educational campaign to dispel myths around EVs, explore financial support options, and improve charging infrastructure to facilitate the transition. To address these issues, an Electric Vehicle Experience Day is scheduled, allowing drivers to test electric taxis and consult with experts. The urgency for change is evident as Suffolk aims to reduce CO2 emissions and improve air quality.
