Jail Warden Arrested in Drug Smuggling Case

In a significant crackdown on drug smuggling, the Amritsar Police have arrested three individuals, including jail warden Gurmej Singh, for supplying drugs to inmates at the Central Jail in Amritsar. The police recovered 4.5 kg of heroin and Rs 4.32 lakh in drug money from the accused, who are believed to be connected with Pakistan-based smugglers using drones for transportation. This operation follows a recent seizure of 5 kg of heroin and is part of ongoing investigations into a broader drug trafficking network. Separately, a former Harris County detention officer, Robert Robertson, received six years of community supervision for his role in smuggling drugs into the Harris County Jail, revealing similar issues within detention facilities. The incidents underscore systemic challenges related to drug trafficking both in India and the U.S., prompting law enforcement to enhance oversight and investigations. Authorities in Punjab are currently working to establish deeper linkages in the drug smuggling operations.
