Study Links Climate Change to Stronger Hurricanes
Recent studies reveal that climate change is significantly increasing the intensity of Atlantic hurricanes, with 2024 showing maximum wind speeds enhanced by an average of 18 to 29 mph due to warmer ocean temperatures. All eleven hurricanes this season intensified, with some, like Helene and Milton, escalating to Category 5, which corresponds to a fourfold increase in destructive potential. The research indicates that from 2019 to 2023, 30 out of 38 hurricanes reached intensities approximately one category higher because of human-caused climate change. Researchers emphasize that this trend is linked to rising sea surface temperatures resulting from greenhouse gas emissions, making extreme weather events more severe. Additionally, NOAA predicts increased variability in hurricane activity, suggesting more frequent active and inactive seasons in the future. This highlights the urgent need for improved understanding and prediction of tropical cyclone behavior amid changing climate conditions.
