Maharashtra Officials Urge Monkeypox Precautions

In response to the rising global concerns over mpox, Tamil Nadu's Health Minister Ma. Subramanian announced inspections at airports to ensure compliance with prevention measures, stating that while no cases have been detected in India, all arriving passengers will undergo health checks. Meanwhile, Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan urged the Maharashtra Chief Minister to implement strict testing and quarantine protocols at Mumbai Airport for passengers from high-risk countries, as the WHO has declared mpox a public health emergency following its spread to Pakistan. The Union Health Ministry confirmed no current cases in India, but precautionary measures are being adopted. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has elevated the risk assessment for mpox as cases emerge outside Africa, notably in Sweden and Pakistan. Furthermore, a recent trial for a new treatment showed disappointing results against the variant driving the outbreak, raising concerns about ongoing transmission risks. Health authorities are preparing for potential imported cases as the virus spreads globally, particularly from Africa.
