The Iowa Department of Transportation has expanded the availability of the Iowa Mobile ID to Samsung Smart Wallet for all Samsung Galaxy devices with Android 12.0 and above. This digital ID can be used at TSA checkpoints, including the Des Moines and Eastern Iowa airports, as well as age verification at select businesses across Iowa. Launched in October 2023 in collaboration with IDEMIA, the mobile ID app allows users to present their identification via a secure encrypted QR code. Although police departments may accept the mobile ID during traffic stops, residents are advised to carry their physical driver's license as acceptance varies by department. Since its launch, around 32,000 Iowans have downloaded the app, and efforts are underway to integrate the mobile ID with additional digital wallets like Apple and Google. The Iowa Mobile ID is part of a broader trend towards digital identification solutions, enhancing convenience and security for users.
