China completes world's first wind-powered underwater data center in Shanghai

China has inaugurated the world's first wind-powered underwater data center in Shanghai's Lin-gang Special Area, marking a significant milestone in sustainable digital infrastructure and energy transition. The $226 million project utilizes over 95% green electricity, primarily from offshore wind, and leverages seawater cooling to reduce total power consumption by nearly 23%, with cooling energy use dropping below 10%. This innovative design eliminates freshwater use and reduces land occupation by over 90%, surpassing China's 2025 efficiency targets with a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.15.
