Newcastle United Signs Midfielder Jacob Ramsey for £39m-plus Add-Ons

Newcastle United have officially signed attacking midfielder Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa on a long-term contract, reportedly a five-year deal worth an initial £39 million, potentially rising to £43 million with add-ons. The 24-year-old, who made 167 appearances for Villa and was part of England’s Under-21 European Championship-winning squad, expressed excitement about joining Newcastle and praised head coach Eddie Howe's track record of developing players into internationals. Howe highlighted Ramsey’s versatility, directness in attack, and Premier League and Champions League experience as valuable additions to the squad, especially following the sale of Sean Longstaff and injury to Joe Willock. Ramsey, who will wear the number 41 shirt, completed his medical recently and joins fellow summer signings Anthony Elanga, Aaron Ramsdale, and Malick Thiaw as Howe strengthens the team. Villa’s decision to sell Ramsey aligns with their need to comply with UEFA’s squad cost rules and the Football Earnings Rule. Although Ramsey did not feature in Newcastle’s 0-0 draw at Villa due to timing of the signing, Howe affirmed that Ramsey is an outstanding player who will add depth and quality to the midfield.
