The Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information (ICRIR) has registered 85 inquiries since it began operations in May, addressing outstanding cases from the Northern Ireland Troubles. Created by the controversial Legacy Act, the ICRIR allows bereaved families and victims to request investigations, although it has faced criticism and protests regarding access to justice. Of the inquiries received, eight have been accepted for investigation and are currently in the Information Recovery stage. The commission, led by retired judge Declan Morgan, emphasizes transparency and accountability in its processes. Despite plans by the Labour government to reform the Legacy Act, the ICRIR is set to continue its work over the next five years, looking into thousands of serious incidents. Commissioner for Investigations Peter Sheridan stressed the importance of thoroughness and sensitivity in addressing the needs of those affected by the violence of the Troubles.
