GE Aerospace Invests $300M in BETA Technologies for Hybrid Electric Aviation Development
GE Aerospace has announced a $300 million equity investment in BETA Technologies to co-develop a hybrid electric turbogenerator aimed at advancing sustainable aviation for both defense and civil markets. This partnership will leverage BETA's expertise in permanent magnet electric generators and GE Aerospace's established turbine technology and manufacturing capabilities, integrating hybrid-electric solutions with existing engine platforms like the CT7 and T700. The new turbogenerator will enable longer range, higher speeds, lower operating costs, and greater payloads, with immediate applications in electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft, including defense-focused variants of BETA's Alia aircraft. GE Aerospace will also gain the right to appoint a director to BETA's board, underscoring the strategic nature of the collaboration. This move reflects GE Aerospace's growing commitment to sustainable and hybrid-electric aviation technologies and positions both companies to scale hybrid-electric flight while maintaining aviation safety and reliability. The partnership is pending regulatory approval and aims to support the expanding U.S. Advanced Air Mobility sector with innovative propulsion solutions.
