Cyberattack Forces Over 100 Aeroflot Flight Cancellations Across Russia
Russian state-owned airline Aeroflot suffered a major cyberattack that forced the cancellation of more than 100 flights, primarily from Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport, disrupting travel across Russia. The attack was claimed by two pro-Ukraine hacker groups, Silent Crow and the Belarusian Cyber-Partisans, who stated they had infiltrated Aeroflot's systems for over a year and destroyed thousands of servers, including accessing sensitive customer and internal data. The hackers warned they might release personal data of all Russians who have flown with Aeroflot, while the airline faces potentially tens of millions of dollars in recovery costs. Russian authorities, including the prosecutor’s office and Kremlin officials, condemned the attack as a serious threat, with some lawmakers suggesting foreign state involvement behind the hacktivist groups. This incident marks one of the most disruptive cyberattacks against Russia since its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, amid ongoing cyber conflicts involving Russia, Ukraine, and their allies. Aeroflot continues to work on restoring normal operations amid widespread passenger disruptions and heightened digital security concerns in Russia.
