6.9 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Central Philippines Affecting Over 500,000
A powerful earthquake of magnitude around 6.9 to 7.0 struck the central Philippines near Calape and the Eastern Visayas region on September 30, with a shallow depth of approximately 10 to 11 kilometers. The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported over 300 felt reports and estimated that more than half a million residents across the Visayan Islands experienced strong shaking, which could cause considerable damage to poorly constructed buildings. Despite initial concerns about a possible tsunami, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center confirmed there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines or the wider Pacific Basin, including Hawaii. Local authorities advised residents near the coastlines of Leyte, Cebu, and Biliran to stay away from beaches as a precaution against minor sea-level disturbances. The earthquake's epicenter was close to urban centers like Cebu City and Tacloban, raising concerns due to past natural disasters in the region. The Philippines' location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" makes it prone to frequent seismic activity, although strong quakes remain unpredictable in timing and location.
