Detroit Names Todd Bettison Interim Police Chief

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan has announced Deputy Mayor Todd Bettison as the city's new interim police chief, succeeding James White who has taken a role as CEO of the Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network. Bettison, a former assistant chief with the Detroit Police Department, will officially step into the position on November 9, while the Board of Police Commissioners conducts a national search for a permanent replacement. White, who led the department for three years, focused on mental health initiatives during his tenure, including the Crisis Intervention Team. Bettison has experience in community engagement, having worked on programs like 'Shot Stoppers' aimed at violence intervention. The transition is expected to be smooth, with Duggan expressing confidence in Bettison's capabilities to lead the department. The announcement was made during a press conference at Detroit Public Safety Headquarters.
