Chinese Lawyer Arrested for Stealing Temple Donations

A law graduate in China has been arrested for stealing over 30,000 yuan (approximately Rs 3.5 lakh) from Buddhist temples by replacing their donation QR codes with his own. The individual, who has not been publicly identified, confessed to using this method in several provinces including Sichuan, Chongqing, and Shaanxi after police released surveillance footage from Famen Temple showing him kneeling in prayer before altering the QR code. Despite his educational background, the case has sparked significant online commentary, with many highlighting the irony of a law student committing such a crime. Authorities confirmed that all stolen funds have been returned and noted that thefts from religious sites are not uncommon in China, with previous incidents reported in Jiangxi and Shanghai.
