Chula Vista Police Shoot, Kill Armed Man During Standoff in Bonita

Chula Vista police fatally shot a 56-year-old Hispanic man in Bonita after responding to a family disturbance involving firearms. Upon arrival, officers found several family members hiding outside and learned the suspect had access to multiple guns. The man exited the house with his hands in his pockets, dropped a handgun on the steps, and then sat down with the gun on his lap despite repeated commands to move away and put his hands up. After he ignored commands, officers fired a less-lethal beanbag round, causing him to drop the gun, but he allegedly picked it up and pointed it at officers as he began to sit up. Three officers then fired their rifles, striking him multiple times; he later died at the hospital. The incident was recorded on body-worn cameras and a police drone, and is now under investigation by the San Diego Police Department’s homicide division.
