Sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in the European Union have plummeted, with registrations down 44% in August 2024 compared to the previous year, marking the fourth consecutive month of decline. The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) reported that BEVs accounted for just 14.4% of new car registrations, significantly down from 21% a year earlier. Major markets like Germany and France experienced steep declines of 68.8% and 33.1%, respectively. ACEA is urging the EU to implement urgent relief measures and expedite reviews of CO2 regulations due in 2026 and 2027, as the industry faces potential multi-billion-euro fines starting in 2025. They highlighted the need for better infrastructure, competitive manufacturing conditions, and consumer support to foster the transition to zero-emission vehicles. The organization emphasizes that without immediate action, the automotive industry's future could be jeopardized.
