Mac Jones Joins 49ers Amid QB Changes
Mac Jones, a former New England Patriots quarterback, has signed a two-year deal worth $7 million with the San Francisco 49ers, including $5 million guaranteed and up to $11.5 million with incentives. Once considered by the 49ers as a potential third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Jones was instead selected by the Patriots at No. 15, where he made a strong debut season but later struggled due to coaching changes. He was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he started seven games following an injury to Trevor Lawrence, before becoming a free agent. The 49ers, having missed out on Jones in 2021, now bring him in as a backup to Brock Purdy, who has become the starting quarterback after Trey Lance was traded to Dallas. Jones' decision to join the 49ers was influenced by the opportunity to work under head coach Kyle Shanahan. The move provides the 49ers with a potentially reliable backup option while they navigate contract negotiations with Purdy.
