Allies Morrison Lead £2.5bn York Central Regeneration Design Team
The £2.5 billion York Central regeneration project, one of the UK's largest city center redevelopments, has appointed a leading design team spearheaded by Allies and Morrison, who developed the original masterplan and will continue as lead architects. The 45-hectare brownfield site by York railway station is set to deliver 2,500 new homes, up to one million square feet of office, retail, and hospitality space, alongside significant upgrades to York Railway Station and the National Railway Museum. International landscape firm Grant Associates will lead the design of extensive green spaces, parks, and public realm, including the Coal Drops area. Other key contributors include Sheppard Robson for government offices, Cartwright Pickard, Corstorphine & Wright, and Haworth Tompkins on residential developments, 3D Reid on the hotel and station entrance, and re-form for Museum Square and initial public realm. The project is a joint venture by McLaren Property and Arlington Real Estate, with majority landowners Homes England and Network Rail, supported by City of York Council and the National Railway Museum. Managing director Tom Gilman emphasized the selection of architects with proven large-scale regeneration experience and a deep understanding of York to create a vibrant, sustainable community and major employment hub in northern England.
