Las Vegas City Council Adds Crossing Guards To 16 Middle Schools, 3 High Schools
The Las Vegas City Council has approved an additional $415,000 in funding to expand the city's crossing guard program to all 16 middle schools and three high schools within city limits, supplementing the existing $2.87 million budget for crossing guards at elementary schools. This decision follows increased community concern over student safety after the death of a high school student and positive results from a pilot program at Gibson Middle School and Cimarron-Memorial High School, which showed improved compliance with traffic laws and increased feelings of safety among pedestrians. While the funding has been secured for the 2025-2026 school year, the process of hiring and stationing crossing guards will be gradual, starting with schools in the most hazardous traffic corridors, and will not be in place at the start of the upcoming school year. The move aligns Las Vegas with neighboring jurisdictions like Clark County, Henderson, and North Las Vegas, which have already expanded crossing guard coverage and reported significant drops in student-involved traffic incidents. The city will also continue to maintain school zone safety measures such as signage and pavement markings. The effectiveness of this expanded safety initiative will be monitored as implementation progresses.
