I-75 Limo Bus Crash Injures 11; Driver Cited

News summary

On Oct. 30 around 5:45 p.m., a 2008 Ford Super Duty limo bus carrying 15 people—mostly teenagers from Detroit’s Community Violence Intervention Program en route to Cedar Point—left the roadway and rolled several times on southbound I-75 in Frenchtown Township, Monroe County, ejecting several passengers. Eleven occupants were taken to three area hospitals: eight with minor injuries, two with serious injuries and one in critical condition. Michigan State Police investigators found the 69-year-old driver did not have the proper group designation on his commercial driver’s license, lacked a valid DOT medical certificate, and the operating company did not have valid authority to transport passengers; the driver was cited on multiple charges. Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors, and the southbound freeway was closed for about three-and-a-half hours, reopening after about 10 p.m. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the MSP Monroe Post as the investigation continues.
