A Newark police officer shot and critically injured a man during an investigation into a stolen SUV near Clinton Place and Hawthorne Avenue on Monday night. The incident began when officers detained a passenger in the parked vehicle, but a second man entered the driver's seat and attempted to flee, resulting in a struggle with the officers. The driver accelerated the vehicle, hitting the police car and other objects, prompting an officer to shoot him. The driver, whose identity has not been released, was taken to University Hospital in critical but stable condition. Both officers involved sustained minor injuries and were also treated at the hospital.
