Father Charged with Murder, Abuse of Infant Daughter in Orange County

Darius Stephone Nichols, a 20-year-old Orange County father, has been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse following the death of his 3-month-old daughter, Nova. Authorities responded to a call on April 30 after Nichols reported the baby became unresponsive from what he claimed was a fall from the sofa. However, an autopsy revealed multiple acute skull fractures, bilateral retinal hemorrhages, and several healing rib fractures, indicating both recent and previous abuse that contradicted Nichols' account. Deputies also discovered suspected fentanyl tablets and the odor of marijuana at the residence. Nichols remains in custody without bond, and officials have emphasized their commitment to seeking justice for baby Nova. The case is still under active investigation as more details are awaited.
