Kilian Jornet Sets Fastest Known Time Linking 72 US Fourteeners
Kilian Jornet, a renowned mountaineer and endurance athlete, recently completed an extraordinary project linking 72 U.S. peaks over 14,000 feet by foot and bike within 31 days, covering Colorado, California, and Washington. The journey began on Longs Peak in Colorado and ended at Mount Rainier, the tallest volcano in the Cascade Range, where Jornet summited all peaks relying solely on human power, averaging 99 miles per day with minimal sleep. This feat complements his previous world record of linking all 82 of the Alps' 4,000-meter peaks in 19 days without motorized transport, showcasing his profound connection to mountains and endurance sports. In a separate event, the Fifth Annual True Penitence climbing festival in Colorado attracted over 140 climbers who competed by climbing multiple routes on the volcanic tuff of Penitente Canyon, marking the largest gathering in the event's history. Additionally, the artistic landscape features the award-winning non-verbal solo play "The Sighlence of Sky," which explores family dynamics, disability, and neurodiversity through physical expression and mime; it will be performed in English and Greek at the Larnaca Medieval Castle as part of the 2025 Larnaca Biennale. These events highlight diverse human achievements and cultural expressions ranging from extreme endurance and community climbing challenges to poignant theatrical storytelling.
