Ethiopia seeks return of sacred artifacts from UK

Ethiopia is set to demand the return of sacred treasures taken by British forces during the 1868 Battle of Magdala, which hold significant religious and historical importance for the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. The Ethiopian Heritage Authority, alongside the Orthodox Church, will lead this effort, arguing that the continued possession of these artifacts by the UK is 'immoral.' Among the items sought are priceless manuscripts and royal jewelry, including illuminated works commissioned by Ethiopian royalty. The Ethiopian government is expected to formally request support from the UK government, potentially under the Labour party, which has shown a willingness to address such reparations. Abebaw Ayalew Gella, the director general of the Ethiopian Heritage Authority, emphasized that these artifacts are sacred and should not be treated as mere collectibles. This diplomatic push will also include claims on other items stored in British institutions, aiming for a broader repatriation initiative.
