Former MMA Star Ben Askren Survives Four Deaths During Double Lung Transplant
Former Olympic wrestler and MMA star Ben Askren underwent a double lung transplant after being hospitalized with severe pneumonia caused by a staph infection. During the surgery, Askren died four times, with his heart stopping for about 20 seconds each time, and he has no memory of the 45-day critical period. The $2 million cost of the transplant was covered by an anonymous donor following public appeals, including one from Jake Paul, who previously defeated Askren in a boxing match. Askren lost about 50 pounds during his illness and is now in recovery, expressing gratitude for the support and love he received. He retired from MMA after his last fight in 2019 and currently runs a youth wrestling academy in Wisconsin. The MMA community, including UFC president Dana White, rallied to support Askren during his ordeal.
