ESPN Host Peter Burns Saved from Choking Incident

ESPN personality Peter Burns experienced a life-threatening choking incident while dining with colleagues in Columbia, Missouri. Burns was unable to breathe after a piece of food became lodged in his throat, and initial attempts by friends and a nurse to perform the Heimlich maneuver failed. As Burns began to lose consciousness, Jack Foster, a nearby youth sports coach trained in CPR and the Heimlich maneuver, successfully dislodged the food, saving Burns' life. Burns later discovered he had sustained four minor rib fractures from the ordeal. Choking is the fourth leading cause of unintentional injury death in the U.S., with 5,553 deaths reported in 2022.
