Queensland Man Jailed Four Years Advocating Terrorism
A 43-year-old man from Logan, Queensland, has been sentenced to four years in prison, with a minimum non-parole period of three years, for advocating terrorism and supporting Islamic State through social media posts. The Brisbane District Court found him guilty of six counts of advocating terrorism after a jury trial but acquitted him of two other counts; he also pleaded guilty to dealing in proceeds of crime related to funds sent to support fighters in Syria. Between 2019 and 2020, he posted videos in English and Arabic encouraging followers to provide weapons and join jihad, and earlier, in 2013, he funded an individual who traveled to Syria for hostile activities. He left Australia in 2019, was detained by Saudi authorities in 2021, deported back to Australia, and arrested upon arrival; he has been in custody since June 2022 after breaching bail by removing his GPS tracking bracelet and attempting to flee the country. Authorities emphasized the importance of joint counter-terrorism efforts by agencies such as the Queensland Joint Counter Terrorism Team, Australian Federal Police, and Australian Security Intelligence Organisation in identifying and prosecuting individuals involved in terrorism-related activities. Officials urged the public to report any information about extremist activity, reinforcing the ongoing commitment to community safety.
