Australian Archibald Prize Winner William Robinson Dies Aged 89
William Robinson AO, a celebrated Australian painter known for his evocative landscapes and portraiture, has died at the age of 89. He was a two-time winner of the Archibald Prize, recognized for works such as "Equestrian Self-Portrait" and "Self Portrait with Stunned Mullet," and was renowned for capturing the essence of south-east Queensland rainforests and northern New South Wales seascapes. Robinson’s art is held in major Australian galleries and prestigious international institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the British Museum. His legacy includes the William Robinson Gallery at Queensland University of Technology, where he also taught art before dedicating himself fully to painting. Long-time friend Phillip Bacon and QUT Vice-Chancellor Margaret Sheil praised Robinson for redefining Australian landscape painting and contributing significantly to the arts, with Robinson having been appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2007. He found inspiration in his late wife Shirley, commemorating her through his work, and his final exhibition was opened by former governor Quentin Bryce.
