Weekend Crashes Kill Multiple People Nationwide
A series of crashes across the U.S. over the weekend — many involving wrong‑way driving or head‑on collisions — left multiple people dead and numerous others seriously injured, and investigators are probing causes including suspected impairment. In Allegan County, Michigan, a wrong‑way vehicle on northbound U.S. 131 collided head‑on early Sunday, killing three people (including the wrong‑way driver) and leaving three others with life‑threatening injuries; authorities said a tribal officer tried to intercept the vehicle and investigators are examining whether alcohol was a factor. In Miami‑Dade County, two people were killed and two others airlifted after back‑to‑back wrong‑way crashes on Florida’s Turnpike that also involved a disabled Florida Highway Patrol vehicle responding to the earlier crash. Near Kansas City, a crash outside Kansas City Kansas Community College killed a woman passenger after a truck and car collided; KCKPD is investigating and seeking tips. Additional deadly or serious incidents included a Jefferson County, Kansas head‑on collision that killed 67‑year‑old Lorretta Stewart, a Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania wrong‑way I‑81 crash being investigated as a suspected DUI that left three people seriously injured, multiple separate deadly or injuring crashes in Phoenix (including a pedestrian struck in a crosswalk, a three‑car crash that killed a woman, and a multi‑vehicle rollover), a three‑vehicle crash north of Springfield that killed a woman, and a two‑vehicle collision near Cotton Plant, Missouri that injured three; local and state agencies have been closing or diverting roadways while they collect evidence.
