Over 35 Filmmakers Urge Mubi to Sever Israeli Military-Linked Investor Ties
More than 35 filmmakers affiliated with Mubi, including Joshua Oppenheimer, Radu Jude, Aki Kaurismäki, and Miguel Gomes, have signed a letter urging the indie film distributor and streaming platform to sever ties with investor Sequoia Capital due to its investments in Israeli military technology companies. The filmmakers highlight Sequoia's backing of companies such as Kela, a military tech startup founded by former Israeli intelligence veterans, as well as drone manufacturers Neros and Mach Industries, linking Mubi's financial growth to what they describe as genocide in Gaza. The letter demands Mubi publicly condemn Sequoia for 'genocide profiteering,' remove Sequoia partner Andrew Reed from its board, and implement ethical investment policies in alignment with guidelines from the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI). Mubi has defended its relationship by stating that the beliefs of individual investors do not reflect the company's views. The filmmakers emphasize that continuing this partnership undermines the values of cinema and implicates those who work with Mubi in profiting from violence against Palestinian artists and civilians. This collective call reflects growing pressure within the film industry for companies to take ethical stands on geopolitical conflicts.
