In a sophisticated fraud, Neal's Yard Dairy in London was tricked into delivering 22 tonnes of luxury cheddar, valued at over £300,000, to scammers posing as wholesale distributors for a French retailer. Despite the financial hit, Neal's Yard Dairy has compensated the small-scale producers, including Hafod, Westcombe, and Pitchfork, ensuring they do not suffer financial loss. The Metropolitan Police are investigating the theft, but no arrests have been made yet. The incident has caused significant concern in the artisan cheese community, which relies heavily on trust and good faith. Neal's Yard is reaching out to cheesemongers worldwide for help in identifying the stolen cheese, particularly in 10kg or 24kg formats with detached tags.
